Making it Official

MAKING IT OFFICIAL
The Bride's family usually pays for an announcement in the Jewish press. Both sets of parents and grandparents must be mentioned in the notice. Click here to post your engagement

THE RING
Unless you are certain of your fiancée's taste, wait until after the announcement and then go shopping together. The world of rings is a whole new experience - but you will very soon become familiar with:

The Four Cs
Clarity - purity
Colour - whiteness
Carat - size
Cut - shape

The unmentioned fifith C is, of course COST - word has it that the usual price range equates to around two - yes, two - months' salary!

THE WEDDING DATE
Timing is everything and you should be thinking about setting a date six months to a year from announcing your engagement. Decide which season you prefer for both venue and honeymoon implications. Also recognise dates that are out because of religious restrictions. According to Orthodox regulations, marriages may not be solemnised on the following dates:

Festival Dates - 2001

Fast of Esther March 8
Purim March 9
Pesach April 8 - April 15
Sephirah April 9 - May 10
Sephirah May 12 - May 27
Shavuot May 28 - May 29
Rosh Hashana Sept 18 - Sept 19
Fast of Gedaliah September 20
Kol Nidre September 26
Yom Kippur September 27
Day before Succot October 1
Fast of Tevet January 5

Not on the Sabbath

Among Reform Jews, marriages are solemnised during the Sephirah, from the Fast of Tammuz until the Fast of Ab (but not on the Fast of Ab itself), on the days that precede Festivals, on the second day of Festivals and on Purim, but not on other prohibited days mentioned above.
