Voice Of Jewish Sport

Andrew Sherwood - Thursday 2nd 2010f September 2010

SO THE waiting is nearly over. No, not England’s Euro 2012 Qualifying campaign, but the start of the new MSFL season on Sunday morning. It’s the time of year where optimism, excitement and anticipation is flowing and it’s encouraging and refreshing to see that maybe 90 percent of the teams believe glory is there for the taking. New teams want to make an impression, other sides want to make up for last season's disappointments, while Neasden A - the outstanding Jewish team right now - want to win everything in sight - and do it with an unblemished, unbeaten record. Odds are it will be raining 10:30am on Sunday...

TOMORROW night does indeed herald the start of the Euro 2012 qualifiers when Fabio Capello's motley crew will no doubt sweep past the likes of Wales, Bulgaria and Montenegro and then come up short when it matters most. However, prior to that, tonight, is Israel's opener against Malta at Ramat Gan. The outstanding fixture later on, UEFA have allowed the Israeli Football Association to bring the game forward by 24 hours to avoid it clashing with Shabbat. It's not often football's governing bodies get it right, this is one such occasion where they are to be applauded.

ANYBODY who can give Jose Mourinho something to moan about gets my thumbs up so step forward Israeli goalkeeper Dudi Awat. The Real Mallorca stopper was up against 'the special one's' latest multi-million pound assembled squad at the weekend and turned in a man-of-the-match performance as Real Madrid were held to a 0-0 draw. Throw in the fact he did it with his head bandaged up - a la Terry Butcher many moons ago in his England days - having taken a knock to the head midway through the first half, it made his almost one-man stand against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain, Karim Benzema all the more impressive.
