Peer, who's seeded 16th at Flushing Meadows, was up against the non-seeded Croat Jelena Kostanic Tosic and took the first set in 52 minutes, 6-4.

The Israeli seemed to be in some danger in the second set finding herself 5-3 down, but won four games on the spin to eventually prevail 7-5.

She next faces either Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier or Italian Alberta Brianti in the second round.

Israel's other singles representative, Dudi Sela, should be in first round action on Tuesday, when he faces Belgian Xavier Malisse.

In the men's doubles competition, Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram may not be playing together - but they will come up against each other in the first round as Erlick and Jordan Kerr take on Ram and Julian Knowle - who are ranked eighth.

Peer is also involved in the women's doubles competition and will once more be teaming up with Romanian Monica Niculescu. The pair, who are seeded 13th, face Netherland's Michaella Krajicek and Canadian Marie-Eve Pelletier in their first round clash.
