Cricket Side Want Elusive Gold
Manager Nigel Rothband believes GB are taking their strongest ever Cricket squad to the Games and is hoping they can go one step better by winning gold.
Having won silver a couple of times and bronze on a few occasions (which they did four years ago), Rothband says: "We have fantastic team spirit, the best prepared squad, a good mix of youth and experience and all are fit and ready for action."
Preparations have consisted of weekly get-togethers as a squad for the past six months, focusing on a combination of fitness, nets at Lord's, dietary advice, social get-togethers and outdoor drills & fielding, while there were also three warm-up matches against strong league opposition.
In terms of looking ahead to the competition and the excitement and anticipation, Rothband says: "The squad are looking to forward to getting out there and bringing back gold, as well as excitement by the fact there will be a Twenty/20 competition as well as the standard 50 over competition.
"South Africa will be the biggest challenge with Adam Bacher leading them again. He's someone with Test Match experience but it only takes one ball to get him out!
"We want to go one better than last time and on the final day be playing in the gold/silver match and not the bronze/fourth place match."
Squad: Darren Gerard (Capt), Adam Brand (Vice Capt), Mark Bott, Rob Yule, Ben Frais, David Romain, Richard Black, Laurence Bensusan, Andrew Daniels, Ryan Kangisser, Neil Lederman, Saul Weitzman, Jerome Colemans; Nigel Rothband (Manager), Michael Jacobs (Coach), Vicky Simpson (Physio)
