Rabbis fear Bush Israel visit

By Marc Shoffman - Thursday 3rd January 2008

Hundreds of Israeli rabbis have urged US President George W Bush to cancel his planned visit to the Jewish State next week.

The Rabbinical Congress for Peace - Pikuach Nefesh, meaning ‘saving lives,’ claims that the country’s media and political parties will interpret the trip as encouragement for further land concessions which would “directly cost the lives of hundreds of Jews.”

The group of around 350 rabbis warned in a letter, “Even if it is not your intention, the slanted media in Israel is interpreting your visit as applying pressure to accelerate ‘Disengagement II,’ a move that will place in mortal danger all residents of Israel.”

Around 10,000 Israeli police will reportedly protect Bush during his first visit to Israel as President next Wednesday which is expected to include meetings with President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and a trip to Yad Vashem.

Meanwhile several separate protest are arranged to coincide with the visit on protecting the status of Jerusalem, settlement activity and policy on Iran.
