Mofaz Warns Iran Over Nuclear Issue

Israeli defence minister Shaul Mofaz this week warned Iran that Israel was preparing to “protect itself” against the Iranian nuclear proliferation if negotiations fail.

The so-called EU Three, consisting of representatives from Britain, France and Germany, have been leading talks with Iran over dismantling its nuclear plans.

But they have so far been unsuccessful and Iranian leaders have said they will continue creating nuclear facilities. And at the same time Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly threatened Israel, last year famously vowing to wipe the country off the map.

Speaking at the sixth annual Herzaliya conference on Saturday Mofaz said: “Thwarting Iran's nuclear aspirations will for now be done by passing this hot potato to the [United Nations] Security Council,"

"At the same time however Israel is committed to protecting itself and that is what it plans to do.”

“Israel will not accept Iran's nuclear armament," he added.
Mofaz said he believed that Ahmadinejad’s policies “will bring disaster upon” the people of Iran.

The Israeli minister said: “Take a look throughout history and see what happened to others who tried to wipe out the Jewish people. In the end they brought destruction to their own people.”

Mofaz also accused Iran of sponsoring the terror attack at the old bus station in Tel Aviv last Thursday. Stressing the continued financial support for terrorist groups Hizbullah and Islamic Jihad, Mofaz said: “Iran provides the Hizbullah with $100 million annually some of which reaches Palestinian terror groups. Iran is also the primary supporter for the Islamic Jihad which has carried out most of the suicide bombings in Israel over the past year.”

The day after Mofaz’s speech Iran claimed Israel would be making a "fatal mistake" if it resorted to military action against the nuclear program, and dismissed Mofaz’s comments as a "childish game."
