Thursday 19th November 2009

Maccabi GB's tournament programme, in partnership with UJIA, kicked-off with two football tournaments taking place at the Power League site in Mill Hill.

All in all, over 200 young Jewish players aged between 8-18-years-old took part over the course of the week.

The first tournament was for Years 10 & 11 and sixth form, and it brought together three schools, which equated to nine teams, and just under 100 players taking part.

JFS won the Year 10 tournament, with Immanuel College close behind in second place, and Hasmonean in third.

It was a similar story in the Year 11 as JFS once more triumphed, Immanuel finishing in second spot, with Hasmonean in third.

JFS made it a hat-trick of wins in the Sixth Form tournament, with Hasmonean as runners-up, thereby seeing JFS crowned tournament winners.

The Years 3 & 4 (primary schools) tournament brought together six schools, which saw 12 different teams compete, incorporating 120 young players in total.
After an initial group stage and quarter finals, the sides were whittled down to the last four, and in the semi-finals, Menorah Foundation A beat Independent B 2-0, while Sinai A ran out 4-0 winners over Menorah Foundation B in the second semi.

The final proved to be a tight affair and with neither side able to break the deadlock, saw the tournament decided on a penalty shoot-out - which a jubilant Sinai side (pictured) prevailed in.

Maccabi GB's Sports Coordinator, Matt Travers, said: "It's great to see the young players get their chance to shine in the primary tournaments and then the natural progression to the older years in secondary school, who are still engaged in Maccabi GB tournaments as 17 and 18-year-olds.

"It's also particularly pleasing to see so many players that had been involved with JCC Maccabi Games in recent years and the Maccabiah Games last summer".
