Stuart Lustigman Column
Last Saturday night's heavyweight championship of the world fight was more of a curiosity event than a boxing match but one not to be missed. It seems most improbable that Russia's World Champion Nikolai Valuev and the Bermondsey challenger, David Haye, could seriously be considered as being in the same weight division. What I find so confusing is, what actually constitutes a world champion when the sport is littered with so many versions of boxing's governing bodies? There's the WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF, WBF etc. I guess that if you want to hold a world title just invent your own.
I do enjoy seeing Sir Alex Ferguson getting all aerated. Arms flailing, increasing rate of mastication and reddening cheeks as blood pressure rises. Having said that I can well sympathise with his frustration at the goal that Manchester United conceded at Stamford Bridge last Sunday. Even allowing for the dubious free kick to Chelsea, the fact that Didier Drogbar was considered not to be interfering with play, and therefore not offside, when he swung at and missed the ball which then beat Van der Sar, makes the definition of the offside law even more questionable. Watch this space as, before too long, the whole issue will explode when a goal of even more significance will be scored under this unclear law.

I'm actually writing this column while watching Liverpool v Birmingham City and if there was ever a case for video reply, I've just seen it. David N'Gog blatantly dived to win Liverpool a penalty. The mêlée that followed the referee's decision took several minutes to sort out before the spot kick could be taken from which Steven Gerrard equalised. A quick review of video evidence would have settled the matter in much less time. They do it in rugby, cricket and tennis so why not football?
No column next week as I'll be in Israel on my Maccabi Masters football tour. It's a tough life!
