Wave Of Graffiti Hits Stamford Hill
Police have launched an investigation after graffiti was daubed on at least a dozen sites across Tower Hamlets and Hackney.
“Jihad to Israel” was among the phrases sprayed on pavements and the sides of buildings during the wave of incidents, thought to have taken place between Wednesday and Thursday.
Initial reports had suggested a number of synagogues in Stamford Hill were targeted. But Mark Gardner, Director of Communications at the Community Security Trust, told TJ: “It seems that no shuls were actually daubed but there is alot of graffiti in Stamford Hill and also in other areas like near to Brick Lane, Limehouse, Tower Hamlets. It does seems unfortunately to have been quite a widespread campaign. It’s being cleaned up very quickly by local councils.”Saying that the police had issued an alert to stations, he added: “We are working with police and local community in Stamford hill to calm fears and make sure people are alert to the situation.”
Detective Inspector Rob Kidd, who is leading the investigation at Limehouse Community Safety Unit, said: "We are taking these incidents of graffiti seriously and we are looking to trace anyone who may have seen those responsible. The graffiti undoubtedly caused offence and we would also like to reassure the Jewish community that we are working hard to track down the offenders. Anyone with information should contact us as soon as possible."
Anyone who can assist is ask to contact Limehouse CSU on 020 7275 4778.
