London Hosts Peace Talks
Gordon Brown today called for the opportunity for peace between Israel and Palestinians to be seized as politicians from around the world gathered in London for meetings aimed at furthering the peace process.
The Prime Minister, during talks at Downing Street with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, raised issues including settlements and the need for confidence-building measures on movement and access.
And the British premier – who last night insisted that economic development would help bring the chance for peace and prosperity – said: “We cannot let the opportunity for peace between Israel and Palestine slip between our fingers.”Other key meetings on today’s agenda include talks between Livni and her Egyptian counterpart, while the Quarter of the UN, EU, US and Russia are expected to focus on maintaining the momentum produced by the Annapolis conference. At that event last November, the leaders of Israel and the Palestinian Authority resolved to try to produce a final settlement by the end of 2008.
Rice warned that the window for a two-state solution had become "narrower and narrower over time", but she said she believed it was too early to be having “any sense of despair about the end of the year”.
