Pakistan floods appeal

Justin Cohen - Tuesday 3rd August 2010

An emergency appeal was launched this week to enable British Jews to assist those affected by the devastating flooding which has affected an estimated three million people in Pakistan.

More than 1,400 have lost their lives and 1.5million have been left homeless in the north-western province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where an 312mm of rain fell in just 36 hours. Tens of thousands have been stranded by the unfolding disaster.

World Jewish Relief on Tuesday responded to the worst flooding to hit the region in eight decades by launching an emergency appeal, which aims to meet the cost of providing desperately needed non-food items, emergency shelter, immediate health care, and materials to assist in the provision of clean water and sanitation.

WJR Chief Executive Paul Anticoni said: "The devastating monsoon has left a trail of disaster in its wake and the scale of need is overwhelming. WJR is proud to be in a position to call on its supporters to help us assist the survivors of this catastrophe, and demonstrate our continued desire to help those both within and outside the Jewish community. WJR will work as closely as possible with trusted partners on the ground to ensure that all funds raised will directly benefit those who need them most."

This is the latest appeal to be the charity in response to disasters around the globe, including in the wake of last year’s devastating earthquake in Haiti.
