Pope's UK Synagogue Visit

The Pope may visit a synagogue during his historic four-day trip to Britain later this year.

It was announced on Tuesday that Benedict XVI's trip, the first papal state visit to this country, will take place between 16 and 19 September and will include a prayer vigil in London and meetings with the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury. One of the themes for the visit will be relations between the major faiths.

While specific details of events with other faith communities were not part of this week's announcement, Dr Edward Kessler, director of the Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths, told the Jewish News: "The Pope is likely to meet representatives from Anglo-Jewry, notably the Chief Rabbi. His visit may well also include a visit to a synagogue. Discussions about his meetings with the Jewish community are underway and announcements are expected late next month."

The current Pope has previously visited shuls in Germany, America and Italy during visits to those countries, and last month Papal Knight Sir Sigmund Sternberg expressed his hope that there would be an opportunity for a further such visit here.

Yom Kippur takes place in the middle of the UK visit, which will provide a scheduling challenge that will need to be overcome.
