The shadow foreign secretary chose the unlikely setting of a kosher restaurant in Hendon to discuss sanctions on Iran and the relaunched Middle East peace process.

William Hague, who was in northwest London on Monday to support the Conservative candidate for Hendon, Matthew Offord, said Iran’s nuclear ambition was, alongside Afghanistan, the most important foreign policy issue.

“The most important issue now affecting Israel is the Iranian nuclear issue and the British Conservative Party has been the strongest advocate of any political party in the whole of Europe on effective sanctions against Iran,” Hague said.

“If we win the election I think that will be the most immediate and urgent foreign policy issue, alongside Afghanistan. Iran will be right at the top of the list. I hope the arrival of a new government will give a new momentum to that.”

The former Conservative leader, who described himself as “a long-standing friend of Israel”, said that a new government could propel the Middle East peace process forward and would provide an opportunity for the British government to become more engaged.

“A new government brings a fresh opportunity and energy and I hope that will be of long term benefit to everyone in the region, including Israelis,” he said.
