Nominations Flood In For Forty Under Forty

Justin Cohen - Wednesday 24th February 2010

Nominations flooded in this week for the Jewish News' Forty under Forty initiative to identify the future leaders of British Jewry.

Launched last week in conjunction with UJIA, the project aims to pinpoint individuals who appear poised to occupy senior roles within the community and those likely to shape the direction and perceptions of Anglo-Jewry through their work in fields such as politics, charity and education.

Following nominations from readers and our panel - selected for their expertise in various areas of the community - the eyes of proud Jewish mothers across the land will be fixed on four issues of the Jewish News in May and June when we will reveal our final list of 40. And if you haven't already nominated an individual that you feel is deserving of inclusion, you still have three weeks to do so before our panel select the top 40 and rank them.

PR consultant Ben Rich, who is chairing the panel, said: "The panel members have one simple criteria when determining rankings: the extent to which candidates will shape our community now and in the future. We are concerned with leadership and leadership potential, not fame or popularity or even good-heartedness. We will of course consider the numbers of nominations received, but we recognise that there will be hidden stars out there who are not well-known. It is, therefore, the quality rather than the quantity of nominations which each candidate receives that will most influence us and the evidence to support the contention that this is a current or future leader of our community - not simply a mensch - which will determine our final decision."

Nominees must be aged under 40 on 31 May 2010.
