Cash Pours In For Ambulance Appeal

by Justin Cohen - Wednesday 21st January 2009

Uri Geller this week donated £500 towards the Jewish News Ambulance Appeal as celebrities, community leaders and politicians rushed to support our campaign.

Thousands of pounds have already been pledged since the fundraising drive was launched last week, as rockets continued to rain on the south of the country.

And while the terrorist attacks from Hamas have dwindled in recent days, Magen David Adom still needs more life-saving vehicles to respond to everyday medical emergencies in the south as well as to help ensure its readiness for any future assaults from Gaza.

The total £60,000 cost will include equipment on board needed to give patients the best possible chance of survival.

"It is an inspiration that the Jewish News and their readers continue to be a beacon of support for Israel in her time of need," said Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor this week. "Their acts of tzedaka will help Magen David Adom continue their heroic and unrelenting efforts to bring aid and relief to those who have suffered, irrespective of their religion or nationality."

And this week, the Jewish News urges its readers to continue giving generously towards our life-saving campaign, which is believed to be the first of its kind by a newspaper anywhere in the world. The ambulance itself will bear an inscription stating it was donated by readers of the Jewish News, while those who send a donation will receive a mention in a future issue of the paper.

Among those who have already contributed towards the intensive care ambulance is Uri Geller. "Although the war is over," he said, "it's important to continue helping people in need in the region." Of the campaign, he said: "It is a great initiative and a good chance for readers of the Jewish News to show your support at these critical times. Please understand that your money will contribute to saving lives."

Fellow Israeli and former Spurs striker Ronny Rosenthal, who also gave a donation, said: "We all hope we will live in peace and quiet, and our neighbours will live in peace and quiet.

"We hope the ambulance will never be needed in response to war. But, at the present time, you never know what's around the corner and it's better to be prepared than not."

Another donor was Brian Coleman, Chairman of the London Assembly, who told the Jewish News: "The children of southern Israel are still under threat from the terrorists of Hamas and, sadly therefore, this ambulance may well be needed in the future in response to attacks. Of course, we hope it won't be needed for this purpose."
