Blair: 'Stop The Hypocrisy'

By Justin Cohen - Friday 19th May 2006

Tony Blair this week called for an end to the hypocrisy of opposing terrorism in every country other than Israel.

The Prime Minister’s demand came during a speech to Monday’s Jewish Care annual dinner, the first communal function at which he has appeared alongside Lord Levy since the loans for peerages scandal grabbed the headlines.

Blair said: “We want to ensure that things change in that part of the world that has huge consequences for the whole of the region, but it really is time that we stopped the hypocrisy of believing that we can oppose violence and terrorism everywhere but in the State of Israel. This is not the way to peace, that is the way to continue separation and conflict.”

Blair told the 900-strong gathering that for him the Jewish community stands for “what a community is about”, adding that Jewish Care “is not just Jewish values in action, it is actually the best of British values in action”.

And as it emerged this week that Scotland Yard has widened its investigations into the ‘loans for honours’ scandal, the Prime Minister offered a rare show of public support for his chief fundraiser Lord Levy.

He said: “Thank you Michael for all the work that you have done. You have taken a few knocks – in fact more than a few – mainly on my behalf.”
The event raised £2.5 million for the charity.
