Phil Takes On Atlantic Race To Raise £1m

by Mel White - Thursday 1st December 2005

Whilst most of us are clinging to our radiators this December, desperate to stave off the winter chill, a Jewish photographer from Essex is proving he’s made of sterner stuff.

Weather permitting, Phil Harris from Loughton, is due to set off this week on an oceanic adventure that wouldn’t rock most people’s boats.

Leaving behind his job as a Daily Mail photographer, as well as his pregnant wife who is currently expecting twins and their two other children, the 41-year-old is taking part in the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race in a bid to raise £1million pounds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital and the baby charity Tommy’s which conducts research into premature births and miscarriages.

Harris, who has teamed up with buddy Charlie Fisher for their Row4Life expedition, is competing against 26 other teams, among them Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell and TV presenter Ben Fogle.

The race, which lasts between 40 and 60 days, sees contestants battle the elements in their bid to row from the Canaries to Antigua, living on nothing but freeze-dried food for the entire duration.

Phil said: “Since learning about the Atlantic Challenge in 1997, I have harboured dreams of taking part in the race. People often ask ‘why do you want to race across the Atlantic Ocean?’ For me there is a very simple explanation. It offers a perfect combination of self-fulfilment and the chance to help two very important charities.

“Our two years of preparation have already generated £350 000- a sum that would impress most. But we will not settle until we have achieved what we have set out to do.”
