The north London side – who have a sizeable Jewish following – host Wolves at their White Hart Lane ground on Yom Kippur.

A club spokesman told the Jewish News: “We always put in a request for religious holidays to be avoided when arranging fixtures.”

Staging the Premier League match on the holiest day of the Jewish year will prevent thousands of Spurs’ Jewish supporters attending the fixture, but the club spokesman confirmed the scheduling of the game was beyond their control.

He said: “We are a multi-denominational club and we always put in a request for all religious holidays to be avoided when arranging fixtures.

“However, due to the sheer number of matches it is impossible to avoid fixtures falling on every date of religious importance year on year.

“Fortunately it does not happen often and the last time we had a fixture on Yom Kippur which couldn’t be moved, was five years ago.”

The fans who won’t be attending the game have been encouraged to use the club’s Ticket Exchange Scheme. He said: “Season ticket holders unable to attend a match at White Hart Lane can make their season ticket seat available for resale to One Hotspur Members by using our Ticket Exchange Scheme, resulting in genuine fans having greater access to matchday tickets.”
