The Israelis start their 2012 European Qualifying campaign against Malta at Ramat Gan tonight – a clash which was brought forward 24 hours to avoid clashing with Shabbat, before travelling to Tbilisi to face Georgia on Tuesday night.

Fernandez said: “I’ve been working on the squad for two months and I’m confident we can win with these players. We have a deep squad and I believe in these players. I really want to reach the European Championships and so do they.”

Promising to go on the offensive in his first two matches, the Frenchman said: “I want to play attacking soccer and score goals. I want a strong defense, creative midfield and an attack which can find the back of the net.”

“These [first two] matches will not be easy, but we must begin with a win. We have a lot of talent in the team and our goal is to beat Malta and only then turn our attention to Georgia.”
