FOR THE youth Olympics in Singapore last week, read the 2010 WPC Swimming World championships in Eindhove, Holland, this week. This time last week we were musing over the Iranian taekwondo athlete who fell injured just as he was set to face an Israeli in the final. Seven days on Israel were claiming gold medals at these Paralympic Games though only after two Iranian swimmers refused to enter the pool with blind Israeli swimmer already in it. At least Zohar Batar was able to joke about it afterwards when telling reporters she never saw her Persian rivals. Unfortunately though, this kind of incident which is becoming more and more apparent is no laughing matter.

ONE OF the most memorable moments of this year’s Champions League, at least from a Jewish perspective, will surely be the sight of Hapoel Tel Aviv striker Etay Schechter celebrating his goal against Red Bull Salzburg in Austria last week, when he pulled out his kippah from his sock. Speculation has been rife regarding the reasoning behind his unique actions ranging from a triumphant gesture against the Nazi history of Austria’s past, to a report that the kippah was given to him by a cancer patient and a longtime Hapoel fan. What isn’t in any doubt is the fact that he was booked for his celebrations. One can only wonder what the difference is between Schechter celebrating with his kippah and a Christian player crossing themselves not only when scoring, but even entering and exiting the pitch?

WITH all the talk over recent weeks being the influx of Israeli stars who are coming over to these shores, ranging from Blackpool to Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Celtic to the Tal Ben Haim will he, won’t he, what may have gone under the radar of late has been Dean Furman’s lightning start to the season. Two goals in two games – both absolute crackers from the South African 22-year-old has already seen him earn rave reviews. While not wishing to jinx him in any way.
