HWFC Held To Draw By Camden
FA Greater London League Division II
Camden 1 Hampstead Women’s Football Club 1
Sunday, 20 January, 2008
After a nervy opening ten, Forbes put Hampstead ahead in the 15th minute, following up from a Gadgil volley which resulted from a skilful interception from Lazarou.
The away side’s football improved following the goal, with some neat passing moves involving centre midfielders Bard and Freeman. Camden looked unlikely to score for the rest of the 45, any headway into the visitor’s half limited by Hampstead’s strong defensive play.
However, a different side emerged after the break. Buoyed by the bitter history between the two clubs, Camden came out fighting. The home side were rampant, with two substitutions providing them with the vigour that the away side then lacked.
A series of well-timed lunges by Hampstead keeper Laura Cox, the player of the match, kept the visitors ahead and going into the last 15 it looked as though the away side might walk away with the three points.
But eventually the pressure told. The home side won eight corners in as many minutes and Hampstead were eventually undone by one of these, Camden drawing level from a slick volley from inside the six yard box by the Camden centre forward.
Hampstead manager Brad Solomon said: “It was a very frustrating result which felt like losing two points rather than securing one.
“It seemed as though a lack of fitness proved the teams undoing and we could not get the ball into any safe positions on the park. At the end of the day Camden deserved a draw having created nearly all the chances of the second half”.
