The Lyttelton

Tucked away in the gloriously beautiful St James's Place, The Lyttelton at The Stafford London by Kempinski is not just any restaurant hidden in a hotel: this hotel is grand, and the restaurant even more so. Elegant and decadent yet thoroughly modern, The Lyttelton nestles perfectly in the hotel and stands out as the place to dine in the area, despite its discreet location.

We were led to our seats and enjoyed the magnificent decor in muted hues whilst admiring the many large flowers displays tastefully dotted around - the most striking of which was placed on a mantelpiece of the most intricate fireplace. Everything about The Lyttelton spells luxury. Seating was extremely comfortable and the spaces between tables rather vast, providing intimacy and privacy for each table. The high standard of the setting set the bar sky-high and the food which was to come followed suit. My starter, a delicious risotto of wild mushrooms, contained a very generous sprinkling of fabulously fresh Perigord truffles and soft herbs and proved to be a delicate yet impressive dish. My partner's smoked salmon starter comprised Frank Hederman's smoked salmon, rye sourdough and horseradish and was light yet satisfying, and the ingredients clearly fresh and of the highest quality. Mains came in the form of a mouth-watering grilled Dexter rib eye steak for me, cooked to perfection and retaining all of its juicy flavour. I complemented the dish with a side of creamed spinach, a classic side which was elevated with the clever addition of sultanas and pine nuts. My partner's main of smoked haddock was beautifully cooked and arrived with grain mustard butter and poached hen's egg. The dish was flavoursome and perfectly presented, leaving him more that delighted with his choice.

We decided to wait between our main course and dessert in order to admire our fellow diners who seemed to be made up mostly of couples of all ages, well-behaved families, friends and colleagues. Going by starters and mains, I knew in advance that a chocolate and hazelnut brownie would be special, but I did not imagine that it would be quite so soft, almost melting in the middle and certainly melting in the mouth. I could not think of a more apt accompaniment than the malted milk ice cream with which it was served. My partner, whose sweet tooth isn't quite as acute as mine, opted for the dessert of Lancashire rarebit which was accompanied by a pear, celery and cobnut salad, and scraped the plate a little too shortly after it was placed in front of him.

We were spoilt with great service throughout our meal and were made to feel like royalty with the sort of service that is professional and formal, yet friendly and not too intrusive. We noted that service was attentive throughout the evening to all of the tables, and this certainly helped create a positive ambience, keeping everyone smiling and content.

In case you’re feeling rather full after your meal, you could always go for a stroll in the park nearby. However, if you're anything like me -and my fellow diners, it appears - you will prefer the warmth and the elegant surroundings of The Lyttelton to linger just a little longer and soak up the great atmosphere.
